Providence, RI - New Haven, CT
Our hotel is located in the center of Providence. Providence is the Capital of Rhode Island, (just in case you did't know). This morning we grabbed our coffee and took a stroll through "Waterplace".
At night "Waterplace" is transformed into "Waterfire", which is 86 anchored burning braziers (each with approx. 33 pieces of wood) that float just above the surface of the rivers that flow through Waterplace Park (Woonasquatucker, Moshassuck and Providence rivers).
We did not know about "Waterfire" till the next day so, I grabbed this photo from the Internet.
After the Waterplace, we ventured over to the State House. To early for a tour, so we took in the sites around the State House.
We are now on the road to New Haven, CT. This morning I booked a tee time at The Tradition Golf Club at Oak Lane in Woodbridge, CT which is close to our hotel and one of the best courses in the area. Since we gave ourselves plenty of time, we decided to get off the 95 Interstate and take 1A (coastal route) to visit a few small towns of Connecticut. Our first little town is Stonington, CT which includes the borough of Stonington, CT. We drove out to the coastline and came upon the Stonington Lighthouse Museum (no time to tour). The lighthouse was taken out of service in 1889 and now serves as the museum.
OK...need to get back on I95 to our next destination...The Tradition Golf Club. The course is tree lined with several water holes. The course was in great shape and the greens were fast. Let's just say, we enjoyed the scenery cause our golf game was not worth talking about.
We asked the Starter where is a good place to eat and he told us that, you know "New Haven" is known for their Pizza. Oh boy..Johnny was in heaven to hear that news. He's a pizza lover and we haven't had any this whole trip. The Starter recommended Frank PePe Pizzeria Napoletana. So, after golf we headed to Frank PePe Pizzeria. We were warned the line would be long and could wait a while but, it's totally worth it. We got there and the line wasn't to bad. We talked to a lady in line with us who spoke very highly of this place and has been coming here for years with her family. Not even 10 minutes later a hostess called for a party of 2...oh that's us, all the other parties were families. Looking around, holy crap there pizza's HUGE!!! So we asked the couple next to us, what size was there pizza and they said Large..well let me tell you..it was XX Large to us. So we opted for the Medium size, can't have leftovers. They have about 5 of their own specialty pizzas OR you can select your own toppings and are priced as each. By the time we were done adding our ingredients for our pizza it was $28.00. Oh excuse me..it's called "Tomato Pie" not "Pizza". Even their Salads were big, so we ordered a Small. The Tomato Pie was OK, definitely a different flavor then we are used to. We both think Pizza My Heart is still the best pizza.
