Canyonlands Nat'l Park - Moab, Ut

Before we entered into the park we came upon these two beautiful Buttes.  The Merrimac and Monitor Buttes were named after the Civil War Ironclad ships of the same name.  The Merrimac (on your left) was the Confederate ship, called the "Virginia".  The Monitor (on your right) was the Union Ship sent to destroy the Merrimac.

Canyonlands Nat'l Park is 337,598 acres of colorful canyons, mesa, buttes, fins, arches and spires.  It's so big they have four districts.  Island in the Sky, which is where we went today, The Needles, The Maze and The Rivers.

Our first stop into the park is Mesa Arch.  This arch is classified as a pothole arch because it was formed by surface water that pooled on the sandstone behind the arch, slowly eroding the rock.

Grand View Point Overlook

This was our 2 mile hike for the day to this overlook.  The hike is along the rim rock and you could not take enough pictures so enjoy some pictures and a video.  It's the easiest and most popular hike to a panoramic overlook at the southern tip of the Island in the Sky plateau.  The views encompass many miles of the Green and Colorado river canyons,  vast areas of red rock cliffs and ravines at either side and distant mountain ranges on the horizon.

Upheaval Dome
This is a 2mile wide Crater with a Dome in the middle.

There are so many scenery pictures to take but here are a few more of some Buttes
